Sunday afternoon in the park

After twists and turns, along with some ups and downs, a long journey ended for the congregation of Hayden Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon with a Dedication Service.“It took us a few years to get to this point, but we didn’t fall apart as a church,” said Melissa Williams-Corley, chairperson of Hayden Baptist’s Board of Trustees. “With the help of the Lord, we just stayed together and toughed it out. He brought us here to the right place at the right time.”Hayden Baptist was formerly was located on Hayden Road, and it served the Shaws Fork community in Aiken County. But in the summer of 2012, lightning struck the church and it burned down.

There was a plan to build a new church on Prosperity Lane, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2013. But that didn’t work out. Then, last year, Hayden Baptist purchased a brick structure with a white steeple on Gregg Avenue that used to be the home of the Aiken Seventh-Day Adventist Church.“We have been worshipping here since the third Sunday in September, but there was a lot of work that needed to be done,” said Verta Johnson, chairperson of Hayden Baptist’s Dedication Committee. “We bought some new chairs and tables, painted and did a whole lot of other stuff. Now we’re ready to rededicate it back to God.”The crowd was so big that not everybody could find a seat in Hayden Baptist’s sanctuary. Some people stood and others went to the annex. The Rev. Wheeler Sr., of the Greater Springfield Baptist Church in Atlanta, delivered the dedicatory message, and the Rev. Ronnie Tyler of Chalk Hill Baptist Church in Wagener led the dedication ceremony.

There also were performances by several choirs, including Hayden Baptist’s gospel group.“God had a plan for us from the beginning,” said Hayden Baptist’s secretary, Sallie Brooks, who also is a church trustee. “My daughter told me, ‘God doesn’t burn down a church for no reason.’ We just had to learn who really was in charge. It took prayer, patience, tolerance and faith. We had to rely on our faith in the Lord to keep us grounded, and we witnessed God’s work. We never missed a Sunday, but we felt like the Israelites while we were wandering around.”Aiken Electric Cooperative, the First Presbyterian Church of Aiken, Ocean Grove Baptist Church in Aiken and others helped Hayden Baptist’s approximately 80 members find places where they could continue to worship together, and part of the Dedication Service was devoted to thanking them for their generosity. The Rev. James Reynolds, Hayden Baptist’s interim pastor, praised his congregation for their perseverance during trying times.“You are very special group of people,” he said.

“You have proved that God would never leave you or forsake you. In the wilderness, God walked with you, God talked to you, God watched over you and God kept you safe. It wasn’t easy, but somehow you held on.”.
